painters - MACE Bruno
Painting

Bruno Macé was born in Paris in 1953.
His work as a painter has seen him exhibit both in France and abroad over more than 20 years.

"Composition, colour, design and transparency... Through his painting, Bruno Macé tells both a story and the tale of his time, interweaving words and images and drawing us into worlds filled with either dreams or nightmares, yet always creating a rich and evocative vision. He stirs up intense emotions with both the power of his chosen themes and the brutality of the patches of colour he projects onto the canvass. The past unexpectedly resurfaces as we scan his paintings, spotting words scattered here and there that either gently draw us in with an invitation to travel or drag us down towards the chasm of nothingness represented by disfigured statues or masks from Africa or the catacombs of Italy... Ruptures or connections, blood or sky: utter terror grips us as we look upon this image of a world from which letters emerge as the only vestiges of civilisation, reminding us that words and language unite and reconcile whilst Man's violence tortures and destroys.
This is Bruno Macé's talent: evoking both hope and anxiety by painting the world as it is, complete with its full array of not only riches but also suffering, the shadow of death ever hovering over us.
This is what makes Bruno Macé a complete artist, an artist who has understood that painting is not simply a quest for beauty, but also a call for contemplation. Painting must stimulate our eyes and minds, but also move with the times, and Bruno Macé has done just that by varying both his paintings’ form and content. His work therefore now represents more than mere distraction: his is a set of works of real worth and a precious asset created by a courageous man."
Text by Jérôme Clément, Chairman of Arte France for Bruno Macé's biography
