all artists - BOTTON Julie
Painting

"Julie Botton or grace in motion.

For the past several years now, I have been following the young artist Julie Botton’s work : it is continuously gaining in strength, in depth, as time goes by. Her broad lyrical sweeps, both controlled and spontaneous, her exuberance and explosion of colors lead to a constantly renewed delight.
Her deep acquaintance with and knowledge of her forebears, whom she admires and towards whom she repeatedly turns (Soulages, Debré, Zao Wou ki) in order to find there strength and inspiration, provide her with a serenity and balance that many artists of her generation might well envy her.
But Julie Botton does not "reproduce" what she sees, she has found her own specific vernacular, in which she expresses her energy and spontaneity.
Nonetheless, her canvases provide a great serenity, a peacefulness that are well suited to that young woman’s personality, so enthusiastic and vivacious. Her canvases fill up the space, open it up, and leave room for lyrical outpourings, that lead into another dimension both luminous and scintillating.
She physically grapples with her paintings, working and reworking them until the final explosion, the harmonious whole is achieved.  Her colors are light filled, often sparkling with glints of gold, white streaks, that enliven the space and bring it to life. She has a fertile imagination, filled with life and spirituality – in fact she admits « I paint what I cannot see… ».
Her technique is constantly improving, she is concentrated on the subject at hand and is good at expressing what she feels, with a great elegance, neither cold nor overly sophisticated.
Living with her paintings provide a great peace of mind, even as it allows our mind free to roam at will in unexpected and nevertheless comforting regions.
Long may she continue to delight us."      Ann Cremin - Art critic, Lyon 2009
