- Art in the city - Towards an alternative approach -

"The involvement of artists in public space constitutes far more than collaboration with the architect or interaction with the architecture. Public space is the place where bridges are built between individual space and collective space, between the citizen and the city.
Therefore, dotting cities with museum pieces, by encouraging the installation of contemporary works designed to be "autonomous", with the aim of whetting the appetite of a new audience, has no impact on the cultural consumption of the population, which consumes little or no culture, as was sadly illustrated by the 2009 study of French cultural consumption by the Ministry for Culture.
Artists must be involved in the very heart of public space and for this to happen, we must stop treating artistic work as sacred: artists who express the desire to be involved in public space must take on a role as "intermediaries" and "bridge builders" between individual and collective space, finding connections between the personal issues of each individual and the urban space.
Project owners clearly have an essential role to play in this process, as their aim is not to construct an "outdoor museum", but rather to build the city of tomorrow".     Bruno Macé
